In Greek mythology 6th and 5th BCE, the Amazons were a race of woman warriors noted for their riding skills, courage and pride who lived at the outer limits of the known world, specifically mentioned as the city of Themiskyra on the Black Sea. In mythology, the Amazons were the Daughters of Ares, the God of War.

Traditionally, the Ancient Greek perid was taken to begin with the date of the first recorded Olympic Games in 776 BC, but many historians now extend the term back to about 1000BC. The traditional date for the end of the Ancient Greek period is the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC. The following period is classified Hellenistic as the integration of Greece into the Roman Republic in 146BC.
